Birch Theft

Birch theft is a growing problem in Northwest Wisconsin, according to the Washburn County Sheriff’s Department.

Birch wood theft is replacing theft of scrap metal or copper that for a long time has led to quick money for drug addicts and habitual criminals.

The thefts are occurring on County and State forests as well as on private property.

If you see someone cutting birch trees and it looks suspicious, call your local or county police.

Try to record license plate numbers and vehicle descriptions which are very helpful, especially if you see someone hauling birch wood in a trailer or pickup truck.
